 | 25 Jun 2008 22:55 | Judy Flather | A heartfelt thankyou to everyone with Chapeltown Silver Prize Band, the guest players and Morgan Griffiths for the wonderful Memorial concert that you held for Dave. For me it was an evening of memories and goose bumps as I remembered him play the tunes. |

 | 13 May 2008 18:06 | jim watkinson | again, sad news for the band, Norman was my first ever tutor with learners class in pensioners hut on warren rec.
thoughts are with Helen and Ian and their families. |
 | 07 May 2008 00:09 | Matthew Wilson | Having not logged onto this site for a while I was upset to hear of the passing of Dave Flathers.
David came to my school and picked me out of the school band to be one of the first players for Chapeltown Youth Band when I was 11 yrs old.
He was a real inspiration.
I am Now living in Mumbai, India, but my father still sees the band play and keeps me up to date.
A great loss not only to banding but to a generation of kids (now adults!) like me who owe there musical youth to David.
May you play on in all the hearts of those you inspired. |
 | 04 Mar 2008 21:08 | Paul | Denton Brass wish everyone at Chapeltown the best of luck in the areas today |

 | 01 Jan 2008 16:47 | Kim Wear | I would like to add my own thanks for the inspiration and guidance that the late David Wood provided to me personally whilst he was Musical Director at Chapeltown between 1979 and 1983. David presided over one of the most successful periods of the bands history, both on the Concert and Contest platform. His genuine interest in developing people, and outstanding interpersonal skills made every individual feel their contribution was essential, valued and respected, and I for one felt huge benefit from his expertise. With this unhappy event we have lost a musician of great quality, and a man of fine stature. |
 | 27 Dec 2007 10:09 | john gordon | hope to see the band early in the new year, very much enjoyed listening to a Christmas tape I bought at the Rockinham Arms. |
 | 19 Dec 2007 21:02 | Sue Hare | It was great to play with the band again a couple of times for the Christmas season and to see some of the old faces. It felt as if I had never left that Solo Horn spot and yes Julie I know just two photos and it could be mine again!! Wishing you all a great Christmas and good luck for the coming year. Sue, Ron & Sophie |
 | 19 Dec 2007 21:17 | dave and paula Ablett | have a good christmas we hope you get some extra players soon I enjoyed plating with the band at one or two jobs this year good luck for the future |
 | 14 Nov 2007 21:28 | Martyn Westerman | I just happened to come across your web site. I am very sorry to hear of the passing away of David Flather, David Grey, Eddie Platts and Steve Wade and extend my thoughts to their respective families. I was in Chapeltown Band as a young cornet player in the late 1960s and early 1970s. I left in my early teens to move on to Hoyland Band and then Barrow Colliery Band. I have very fond memories of my time at the CSPB. On a lighter note I am delighted the band is doing so well nowadays. All the best. Martyn (Vancouver, Canada) |
 | 09 Nov 2007 06:24 | Mike Roebuck | It has been a while since I looked in here,so it was a double shock to find out that we had lost both David Gray and David Flather. I remember them both very well, in fact I remember David Flathers dad, Jack, as well. The last time I saw David Flather was in the Commercial at Chapeltown, when the band practisednext door. He married his first wife, Jill, on the same day in 1966 that I was attending the wedding of my uncle in Sheffield. I was one of the young players he taught; unlike many of the others, I didnt carry on my banding activities much after leaving home, apart from a very short spell with York Railway Institute band in 1974. I am very sorry that I will be unable to attend the celebration of Davids life in the Commercial on Saturday evening, but I will be thinking of you all. I am a very sad man tonight. |
 | 11 Oct 2007 21:27 | keith cookson | shocked and saddened to learn of the death of Dave Flather. He was a great bandsman. we had some fantastic after rehearsal sessions in the pub next door to the bandroom, followed by fish and chips across the road. condolences to his family and his many friends. |
 | 08 Oct 2007 22:44 | Judy Flather | Thank you all for your wonderful cards and messages they are a great source of comfort . Thank you for your support, I feel part of a great big family at this sad time. Thank you for the fantastic send off you gave him, he would have loved it. Dave,s celebration of life will be held at The Commercial in Chapeltown on Sat. Nov. 10th from 7.30pm. Looking forward to seeing you all again.Judy x |
 | 05 Oct 2007 19:07 | Kim Wear | I,like many others who have posted on the site, feel very privileged to have been asked to play at David Flathers funeral at St Saviours Church last Monday. It was also a great honour to be asked to represent his pupils, saying a few words of remembrance at the service. There are so many stories of Davids exploits that I, (and many others), could have spoken of for hours, but time (and emotion), did not allow. Chapeltown Band have lost some excellent musicians and good friends over the last couple of years, in Steve Wade, Eddie Platts, Beverly Williamson, David Grey and most recently David Flather, and whilst we will all be much poorer for their passing, we have signed Gods transfer form for one top quality quartet, with a fine Musical Director. |
 | 02 Oct 2007 20:46 | Mel Walker | OMG so many memories, just wondering now how many of the old members are still there x |
 | 02 Oct 2007 20:40 | Andrew Hindley | Just a few words to say how priveleged both myself and Julia feel to give Dave a "good sendoff" as part of what could be best described as "Flather Brass". I am sure that Dave, as a life long friend and mentor will last long in our memories, and as a legend in many more. Rest in peace Dave. |
 | 30 Sep 2007 15:45 | jim watkinson | Sorry to hear the news of Dave Flathers death, he was truly a chapeltown band man throuhg and through, an inspiration to many of us as youngsters, i certainly tried to model my playing on his teachings and style, and still use his philosophies to this day. Arohanui. |
 | 27 Sep 2007 22:19 | peter gowers | greetings all, so very sorry to hear about the passing of David Flather, if it was not for David, many people would not be around playing in brass bands, heaven is now a more musical place now. |
 | 27 Sep 2007 22:19 | peter gowers | greetings one & all, so sorry to hear about the passing of David Flather,he was an insperation to so many and will be missed by so many,Heaven is a more musical place now. |
 | 17 May 2007 21:33 | Sue Hare (nee Davies) | Very sorry to hear about Dave Grays recent demise. I agree with you Phil if it was not for people like him and David Flather we would never had the opportunity to learn so much. I think many of us owe alot to these guys. Its a few years since I played with Chapeltown on Solo Horn but I recognise alot of the players names. Cant believe that Andy Platts and Kim Wear are back again. Good luck for the coming year |
 | 17 May 2007 21:33 | Paul Gray | It is good to see you helping other players with the fingering chart etc. but one of my students came to me and showed me this sight and as an ex soprano cornet player i have to disagree on your theory that they can play higher than a Bb cornet as I have just had a 30 minute conversation with my student that they should be aiming for a range of G above C and be able to use these notes as well as they can in the stave..... |
 | 15 Apr 2007 21:17 | Phil Lukeman | Really sad to hear of Dave Gray"s long illness and sudden passing away. Dave Gray and Dave Flathers, amongst other players, were an inspiration and without their encouragement and the time they devoted to teaching new players, many young players, such as I was at the time, would never have enjoyed the pleasure of performing music live. They were also good company in the bar after too. |
 | 15 Apr 2007 21:17 | Phil Lukeman | Hi Paul,
thanks for the reply, I live in Ireland now, but I might pop down for a listen to one of your rehearsals or concerts if there is one on when I come back to visit. |
 | 15 Apr 2007 21:16 | jim watkinson | dear band, sad to hear of David Greys passing, thoughts are with all who remembered him and his family.
fondly remember some entertining evenings when i was a lad and Dave was conducting.
some good news, many thanks to the band for helping Phil Lukeman to get back in touch with me after many years.
love to you all

 | 15 Apr 2007 21:16 | Martyn Westerman | Have just stumbled on this website. Just thought I would say how sad I am to hear that both David Grey and Eddie Platts have passed recently - they were both fine musicians and human beings. The roll call of names in the Guest Book looks like a scene from All our Yesterdays - years I remember with fondness. I now live in Vancouver, Canada. I wish everyone at CSPB (past and present!) well for 2007. Martyn Westerman (Cornet player: 1968-early 1970s) |
 | 06 Mar 2007 21:59 | Paul Wilkinson | The following message is posted on behalf of Tony Boon and relates to the sad loss of David Grey, one of our former conductors.
Dear Tony,
I hope you dont mind me sending this but I found your address on the computer. It is to let you know that David died on the 1st March. He had been ill for quite a time with emphysemia but he died suddenly. I dont know if anyone will remember him at Chapeltown Band. We went to Butlins at Skegness the other week and met Kim Wear. David said he would keep in touch with him but I think it was one of those things he was going to get round to when he retired. Unfortunately he never reached retirement age, He would have been 65 this coming Monday.
I hope you dont mind me writing.
Love Stella |
 | 06 Mar 2007 21:37 | Paul Wilkinson | Hi Phil, good to here from you and that you have got the bug.
If you are still around Chapeltown come and join us. |
 | 06 Mar 2007 10:10 | Phil Lukeman | Kim Wear and Andrew Platts playing for Chapeltown again, I wish I had been there!!! Hi guys, hope you are both well, I know I am a bit late, but just got the brass band bug back. |
 | 27 Nov 2006 12:21 | Andrew Oxley | A very early morning to you all.
Just having a browse round tinternet after trying to find a recording of next years regional test piece, and I stumbled upon the site. Dunno if you remember me, but I played front-row cornet when we won the Nationals. I cant believe it was so long ago. Ive been out of it for a while but Im up in Edinburgh now, and just started playing again with Bathgate Band.
There are a few names on the roster I recognise, some I dont, but I hope everyones keeping well nonetheless. Might see you at one of the North of England contests if you venture up that far. I think we are off to Blackpool in 2007, so you never know.
Ciao for now. |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | Rachel Plant (nee Bralsford) | Hi everyone, hope you're all OK. Sorry not seen you for ages - regularly keep informed via website with events. Still have occasional 'blow' - much to my neighbours delight! Hope to see you all soon xx |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | Ian | excellent pages on how to play, sludgepumps indeed! When are you going to see the light and stop messing with those valves. Come over to the dark side, get a trombone! We're endangered you know. By the way looking for a G trombone, anyone know where there is one. |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | Janie | Is Kim Wear the Kim I used to know from National Mutual days???? |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | Andy Gray | Hi and a Happy New Year to all at CSPB (or is it just Chapeltown Band now?).
Good luck contesting this year, and as an ex-memberI will be following your progress with interest.

 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | Adam Lessard | Hi to everyone in Chapeltown Band. Hope everyone has had a good Christmas break. Please email me if you have the time. I'd love to hear from folks in the band. Sorry I've been so bad about keeping in touch. arlessard@yahoo.com--even a quick note would be great. I don't have many of your email addresses. But this can be my Christmas and New Years greeting to everyone. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | Rick Nelson | I've just moved here from the States and am playing with Deepcar now, but if you ever need a sub horn, let me know,
Cheers, |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | Rick Nelson | I've just moved to the UK and am looking for a band to join. I played 2nd tenor horn for the Illinois Brass Band for 9 years, during which we won 6 North American championships, and then one year stints with the Chicago Brass Band and then Prairie Brass. You might guess that there was a bit of a shake up in Chicago over the past 3 years. If you have a horn vacancy or know of a band in the Sheffield area that does, I would be very grateful to hear about it,
Cheers,
Rick |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | Raymond.Ibbotson | You seem to be invaded with junk mail.Can't you do anything about this? |

I'm very, very sorry to hear about Eddie Platts - a wonderful euphonium player and a fine fella to boot! Andrew - are you likely to be playing Batley Variety Club again in the near future? Do let me know. Regards to everyone else I know here, too. |

Thanks
Andrew Platts |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | Andrew Platts | Thanks Kim, I know how much you thought about him. I'll be posting the details for his funeral as soon as I know what's happening. Looking back we have a great deal to be thankful for and almost everything that I've done is as a consequence of my Dad playing with Chapeltown. His grandfather first played with the band in around 1870 having come over to live in Chapeltown from Oldham, where he had, I believe, been a member of the famous Oldham Rifle Brigades Band. His father, uncles and sister played with the band and my two brothers, Edward and John, also became members. He joined the band in around 1935 and I have a great picture of him in his first uniform, with his cornet under his arm. No boy was ever so proud. After his national service he also played trumpet with local dancebands. He had many friends in the band and I have fond memories of David Flather, his father Jack, Terry Turton, Athol Higgins, Tony Boon, Norman Kirk, Terry and Neville Wilkinson, Steve Wade, Stan and Jim Watkinson, David Grey, Ned Hoole, John Fulleylove, Trevor Goodison, Les Saville, Mick Roebuck, Kim Wear, John Ogle, Danny Bellingham, Colin Crossland and a whole host of others that shared the good times with him (please excuse me if I've forgotten anyone for now). He left the band to join me and Kim at Desford in 1975 and I was so happy for him that he played at the Granada Band of the Year and the British Open at the Kings Hall, Belle View. He returned to Yorkshire banding playing with the, then, Quaker Sutherland Band before putting his instrument in his case for the last time. His band was Chapeltown and his heart and thoughts always remained there, and I'm pleased to say that my registration has returned to the band this year. He's a hard act to follow. Anyone that knew him will know exactly what I mean. He didn't make a lot of noise or fuss, he was amusing, polite and friendly, a good bloke and a true gentleman. To know him was to like (love) him. He worked hard all of his life providing his family with security and a peaceful and happy home, and he earned the respect and friendship of his peers, neighbours and colleagues. He was blessed with a happy marriage that was filled with mutual love and companionship. His enthusiasm, interest and love of music, and Sheffield Wednesday, never dimmed. As a father and grandfather he was truly wonderful, always supportive, very often amusing and rarely judgemental. He loved his family and he loved them to be around him. He suffered from ill health for many years and towards the end his situation was difficult and frustrating for him. He never complained and maintained his spirit and humour throughout, and having given a great example of how to live he then taught us that in his passing we that are sound in body have little to complain about. He was greatly loved, he will be greatly missed and gratefully remembered. It's appropriate that there is a picture of him with the band, in the prime of his life, stood at the side of his father with his sister at the front, on this website. His character and spirit are represented perfectly in that moment. I would be truly pleased if anyone that sees this message could contact the names I've mentioned, where possible, and accept our invitation to his funeral. |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | Eddie Platts (Jr) | Thanks for your kind words Kim, long time no speak.
Ned |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | Kim Wear | I am very sad to report that Eddie Platts has passed away. In my view Eddie was one of the best players ever to grace the Chapeltown uniform, and was an inspiration to all who heard him play. As a young player myself with the band in the 60's, Eddie was the first player I ever heard triple tongue 'live', and believe, me his version of Hailstorm on Euphonium was scintillating. Eddie was truly a lovely bloke, fine musician and will be remembered very fondly by those of us who were proud to know him. |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | Andrew Platts | Nice to see Tony Boon. I remember his party piece of 'Cherry Blossom Pink'. I also remember his close friendship with Dave Flather, Dave Grey and Terry Turton.
Sorry to report that my father,Eddie, is very, very ill and may not even see out the night as I type this. Chapeltown Band was very close to his heart and it would be nice to hear from anyone. Phone me on 07770 777977 if you would like to be kept informed although it may be better to email me with your contact details. Please let any of his old friends know as I know it would be important to him. |

 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | Andrew Platts | Hi,
It was good to play with the band at the area. Thanks to Kim for asking me and thanks to Derek Renshaw. It was nice to have a family involvement again after all these years and good to see the band in such good shape. Keeping bands together these days is not easy and congratulations to everyone at Chapeltown for doing a great job. It would be nice to hear from anyone that wants to get in touch.

 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | david morton | David
Have just discovered the site following a comment from Jim and Chris Watkinson who came to see me and my missus over the Christmas break. So the information came from Chapeltown to Gleadless via New Zealand. Well whatdoyouknow!!!
I like the site - its very user frendly - and hope to make the occasional comment in the future.
I played in the band from 1976 for about 10 years and have some very happy memories of people and events.
Regards
David Morton |

 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | David | Kim and Tristan? He's still moaning about the lack of a recognisable melody :-) |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | Karen Mahood | hey everyone hope you are all well. Am coming back on saturday, depending on if the boat can get off the island, as we've been having really bad weather here this week. Hope you've all had a good summer and see ya when i get back. |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | Kim Wear | Hiya Jimmy, hope you Chris et al are keeping well and that Yorkshire accent is still intact. Tristan and fun are not two words I would personally put together, particularly after a 12 year break and having Roger Webster and Dyke on immediately after us. Anyway I suppose it gives him the opportunity to tell all his mates that he sat in the same chair as Kim Wear at the Area !!!! |

 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | x chap player | Sorry, but I've had to remove this posting. I hope anyone that's seen it understands my reasons.
|
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | David (webmaster) | SOrry - there's been a problem lately with the guestbook - it hasn't been accepting postings... some problem with the PHP script that drives it. I've made a few changes and it (plainly) appears to be working OK now. Sorry if anyone has been posting. If you want to repost your message, please do so. |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | David (webmaster) | Andrew,
Glad you enjoyed the blow! Your help was much appreciated. If we ever need the services of a great cornet player, we know where to come!
Thanks. |

We've just finished our last rehearsal save for tomorrow at Bradford. It's a big challenge. We're looking forward to it but I don't think we've got any illusions, if you get my drift :-) |

 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | David | What I want to know is, what are goose sets? Are they something you use when marching to give the person in front of you a cheap thrill? |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | Raymond Ibbotson | Hello
Best wishes to all in Chapeltown Band |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | matt | maybe we should buy Andy some bagpipes?, it can't be any worse than his trombone playing!. |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | Michelle, Flowers Band | Great site, just checking up on me ol' mate and partner in crime Hilary. See you soon matey and good luck to the band over the coming months. |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | Naomi Cornish, Leyland Band Percussionist | very nice site! keep up the good work |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | David | Matt,
If you ask me, it seems like an offer that we couldn't refuse. Perhaps we could even afford to buy a new band room. I don't see the problem with supplying the details to Mr Emeka. Afer all, he seems like a nice person with excellent contacts, and clearly his taste in music is impeccable :-' (that's tongue in cheek if you didn't know) |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | matt | ok... lets give you our bank account details so you transfer the money.... idiot!

|
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | David | I thought you'd appreciate that one, Ian! |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | SCOTTY | Get that filthy link off the News Page! |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | David | Raymond, various bits of the site *have* been updated. The appearances page has been revised, the 'how to play' has had quite a bit of attention in the past few months. I admit the news page is lagging a tad. The musical directors page has been updated this year ('cos we got a new one). The only outstanding job currently is the photo album which may get addressed shortly. Sorry if you're unhappy with things, but like many, I have extensive work and family committments, not to mention Band and trying to study for a Masters degree to boot. |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | Raymond.Ibbotson | When are you going to update the site? It has been like this for over a year now. This is the only way that friends can keep in touch with the band, surely there must be someone who can look after the site properly. If not just delete the site and forget about it.
Raymond. Ibbotson |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | Ben | I should've Scrolled Down |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | Ben | Hi,
Just wondering ... did some of the players from Chapletown Band help out the Yiewsley and West Drayton band at the Whit Friday Marches?
Ben |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | Clare | Hiya! Nice website, but the 'how to play' bit kinda baffled me with science!! I currenty play principle euph in a 2nd section NE band, but am looking for a band in the Sheffield area, as this is where I will be going to uni. Any ideas?? |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | Colin Davenport | Don't suppose Matt Newbould happens to be the trombone player/dentist who was at Sheffield university until a couple of years back? Apologies if not...
Great site by the way. |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | matt | aswell as the poorly disguised sop player, you can just about see my slide ( 3rd slide back ) |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | Steve | Yep, and he would have got away with it if it weren't for them pesky kids... |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | David (webmaster) | It wouldn't happen to be the poorly disguised sop player would it by any chance? :-) |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | paula & dave ablett | a very good web site, nice to see the band is doing well, hope you are successful at nationals
paula & dave ablett ,shirland m w band |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | Steve Burgess | Just to let you know that you can play "spot the imposter" at http://www.ywdband.com/news_pictures.shtml |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | Tony | Great Site
|
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | Raymond.Ibbotson | The Band History section of the site tells nothing whatsoever of the history of the band, surely you can do better than this, this is just a statement about the present band. Is no one prepared to do any research? The band has a fine and distinguished history. There is a vast amount of information to be gaind localy. Even I here in Wales can tell you the name of the band secretary who served 40 years. |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | David | Thanks, Steve. I'll make sure your thanks get passed on. |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | Steve Burgess | Hi, Just a quick message to say a huge thanks to all of the players at Chapeltown who helped us out at the Whit Fridays this year. A great day out and I hope you all had as much fun as we did!
Many regards from everyone at Yiewsley & West Drayton Band |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | Hilary Mateer | Gary
Michael Hart has been playing for Oughtibridge for the past year but has just moved to Stocksbridge. I have his contact details (been playing next to him for the past year) and if you get in touch with me privately if will put you in touch. Hilary Mateer Hilary@Mateer.co.uk |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | David (Webmaster) | Gary,
I emailed Michael some time ago to the address he left on the GB when he originally posted but I received on reply. |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | Raymond.Ibbotson | The new site looks good. The only problem and its the same with all these band sites. No one ever answers. I have been writing to your site for years, sent you old photos ect, I have never had a answer. I have to ask, what is the point. The only possible answer is that no one ever looks at the site
Best wishes. Raymond.Ibbotson |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | gary | hello, was wondering if micheal hart had found a band. don't know how to contact him can anyone help |

 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | David (Webmaster) | Bands Reunited
--------------
I'm going to set up an 'alumni'-type page for the Band to enable past players to get in touch with each other. If anyone would like to send me their names, details of when they played with the band and what instruments they played, I'll do the honours. Also, a photo (current or old) probably wouldn't come amiss. |
 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | Raymond.Ibbotson | Change of EMail address, I have left many messages on your site but I never get a answer. I would like to hear from Terry Turton, Helen West, or the Wilkinsons or anyone in the 50s and 60s band

All the best

 | 24 Apr 2006 23:35 | Helen West (nee Turton) | Hello to anyone who remembers my family. My dad Terry Turton played the cornet in the band in the 60\'s and 70\'s. Lot\'s of memories, standing around the band stand in Whitby, Chapeltown Park and Buxton Spa, what a way to spend a Sunday! |
